Apparatus Operator/Pumper (AOPP) NPQ Practice Test

When approaching an intersection, the priority is to confirm you can move safely without conflicting with traffic in any lane. If you cannot account for all lanes, you should stop and survey the area. Stopping gives you a chance to look in all directions, check for vehicles that may be obscured by other cars, trucks, or objects, and spot pedestrians. Only after you have a clear view and can identify a safe gap in every lane should you proceed, and you do so slowly and with caution. Moving through the intersection without stopping risks hitting vehicles in lanes you can’t see yet, or catching pedestrians off guard. Simply proceeding with caution or yielding to pedestrians alone doesn’t guarantee safety when visibility is limited or some lanes aren’t fully visible.
